‘Cold Blows The Wind’

digital print on canvas, 2019    129cm x 190 cm

The title for this work ‘Cold Blows the Wind’ comes from a song by Klein, Dietz & Friends, a local folk band from Dunbar.  The work itself was inspired by the song and the dark history of the Bass Rock.  The lyrics of the song also inspired the idea of the work being a triptych, a piece of work in three pieces.  These were often found in churches to tell religious stories and Esther wanted to present the work in a way that went with the religious theme that inspired the song.

The work is a collaged digital image, made up from a series of both found and photographic images.  The photographs are from a boat trip around the Bass Rock and the found images are from the tiles and cards created by Esther, and also from some medieval manuscript illustrations. Using these Esther has created a large-scale work for Rock & Bird that features many of the images she regularly uses in her work, the large skies over the Forth and the Bass Rock and its gannets.
